Anuar Fariz Fadzil, CEO of Malaysia’s state agency Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), will step down when his two-year contract ends on October 2, after a tenure of drawing MYRRM180 billion ($44 billion) in digital investment.

In a statement on Tuesday, MDEC said Anuar would not seek to renew his contract and would pursue opportunities outside the agency. MDEC chairman Ganesh Kumar Bangah said the board respects the decision. MDEC has yet to name a successor.

MDEC said that from 2025 to August 2026 it secured close to MYR180 billion in digital investments from more than 1,000 companies with “Malaysia Digital” status, targeting over 42,000 high-value jobs.

During his tenure, Anuar sharpened MDEC’s focus on outcomes such as jobs, exports, revenue, and investment. MDEC also positioned it as Malaysia’s specialist digital-implementation agency.

He led its push toward the government’s “AI Nation 2030” goal and its role in the Malaysia Digital 2030 plan, covering AI adoption, high-value investment, industry transformation, and talent.

Ganesh said MDEC became stronger and more focused under Anuar and the Anuar’s achievements would shape the agency’s growth beyond his tenure.
