Under the guidance of Bank Indonesia and the People’s Bank of China, Indonesia and China have launched a cross-border QR payment linkage connecting Indonesia’s QRIS payment system with Chinese payment platforms through Alipay+ and UnionPay International.
In a statement on Thursday, Alipay+ said the initiative enables consumers from both countries to make QR code payments using their domestic e-wallets and payment applications. Users of Alipay and the UnionPay App can make payments at more than 40 million merchants across Indonesia per the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), most of them micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). In China, QRIS-supported e-wallets and banking applications will be able to scan more than 80 million Alipay and UnionPay QR codes.
The implementation supports the use of local currencies in cross-border transactions and is intended to improve payment convenience for tourism and trade activities. Indonesian merchants will not need additional hardware or system integration to accept payments from Chinese users, as existing QRIS codes can already support the service, according to Alipay+.
The launch comes as Chinese visitor arrivals to Indonesia reached more than 1.34 million in 2025, the highest level in six years.
The QRIS-China linkage is part of broader efforts to expand interoperable payment connectivity across Asia. The initiative is supported by industry partners including Ant International , whose Alipay+ platform provides the technical connection between payment systems.
Alipay+ said it currently partners with 50 e-wallets and banking applications, connecting more than 2 billion user accounts to over 150 million merchants worldwide.
