Adtech company Equativ has become a technology partner for ChatGPT Ads, giving brands and agencies another route to activate campaigns on the platform in markets that currently include Japan.

Equativ said it will offer campaign planning and activation across ChatGPT Ads, including creative formats and messaging tailored to different stages of a user’s decision process. The company has also built an Ad Studio tool intended to recommend targeting and creative approaches for the channel.

The move adds another AI-native advertising channel to the mix for Asian marketers. TNGlobal recently reported that Criteo expanded its Tyroo reseller partnership into Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines as adtech companies increase local support across the region.

Partner buying expands alongside self-service

OpenAI said in May that advertisers could buy ChatGPT ads through partners or through its beta self-service Ads Manager. The company has continued to expand the advertising platform and introduced additional AI-powered ad tools in September.

Equativ’s announcement places it among the technology partners supporting that buying model. The adtech company said its coverage includes Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, with additional markets expected to be added as availability expands.

Japan is one of the current ChatGPT Ads markets in Asia. OpenAI said in August that ChatGPT Ads had launched in Japan alongside the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil and South Korea, following its earlier pilot.

Context becomes part of campaign design

Unlike conventional search advertising built mainly around keywords, ads in a conversational product can be selected based on the context and intent of a user’s interaction. Equativ is positioning its existing contextual-advertising and native-ad experience as a way to adapt campaign creative to those different stages.

That approach also raises a different set of measurement questions for advertisers. A conversation can move from general research to comparison and purchase consideration without following the same sequence as a search-results page or social feed.

OpenAI says ads are separate from ChatGPT’s answers and that conversations are kept private from advertisers. The advertising system therefore needs to provide useful targeting and measurement without exposing private conversation data to brands.

Adtech firms move into conversational interfaces

For Equativ, the partnership extends its media platform into a channel that sits outside the traditional open web, retail media and connected-TV inventory it already supports.

The broader test for marketers will be whether conversational advertising produces incremental customer acquisition rather than shifting spending from existing search and social channels. As availability expands across Asia, campaign performance in Japan will provide one early indicator of how brands adapt creative and measurement to an AI conversation interface.
