Vietnam’s leading technological firm FPT and Japan’s industrial giant Mitsubishi Motors will collaborate in software and digital technologies, including the potential establishment of a future joint venture focused on the automotive sector.
The two sides have signed a memorandum of understanding for the move, according to statements released on Thursday by the two companies. The agreement will support discussions around IT services, software development, and AI-related technologies as the automotive industry accelerates its transition toward connected, software-defined, and AI-enabled vehicles.
The partnership aims to combine Mitsubishi Motors’ automotive expertise with FPT’s capabilities in AI, software engineering, and digital transformation. The companies are also evaluating the possibility of establishing a joint venture in the future.
FPT Corporation founder and chairman Truong Gia Binh highlighted Japan is pursuing a technology-driven development strategy centered on artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, regenerative medicine, and marine robotics. The collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors represents an important step in FPT’s long-term partnership with Japanese corporations and is expected to help accelerate AI- and data-driven transformation in the automotive industry, the executive added.
Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato said the partnership is intended to create new business opportunities by combining Mitsubishi Motors’ experience in mobility with FPT’s technology capabilities and software talent base.
FPT has built a significant presence in Japan and currently operates 18 offices and research centers across the country, supported by around 5,000 employees in Japan and 18,000 technology specialists globally. In the automotive sector, FPT established a dedicated automotive technology subsidiary in 2023 after more than two decades of experience in automotive software development.
Mitsubishi Motors, a member of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, operates globally with approximately 28,000 employees and manufacturing facilities in Japan and ASEAN markets. The company is known for its SUV, pickup truck, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle offerings.
