Safran.AI, the AI unit of French aerospace group Safran, will set up Safran.AI Singapore, its first international subsidiary in Singapore, the firm said in a statement on Thursday.

The move follows a memorandum of understanding between Safran and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). The cooperation can strengthen Singapore’s role as Safran’s hub in Southeast Asia and lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation.

Initially, Safran.AI Singapore will focus on three areas. First, it will develop AI solutions for industry through a center of excellence. It will start with automation of digital inspection to support Singapore’s MRO 4.0 goals for Safran, its partners, and customers. MRO refers to maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft and engines.

Second, it will carry out research and innovation, drawing on Singapore’s talent pool and academic institutions, while serving Safran.AI’s customers across the ASEAN.

Third, it will support those customers across ASEAN from the Singapore base.

The subsidiary is expected to grow to about 50 employees over the next five years. Hiring will begin in the first quarter of 2027, with roles including data scientists and AI engineers.

Sébastien Fabre, CEO of Safran.AI, said the subsidiary is a new step in the company’s strategy, drawing on Singapore’s talent and its aviation maintenance ecosystem. He said the team would contribute to the company’s growth across Southeast Asia.

Philippe Errera, executive vice president for international development and government affairs at Safran, said Singapore has created an attractive environment for Safran’s activities, combining a dynamic business ecosystem, academic excellence, and strong government support.

Cindy Koh, executive vice president of EDB, said Safran’s decision to set up its first international AI subsidiary in Singapore reinforces the country’s position as a hub for advanced Industry 4.0 technologies and AI.
