France’s Alstom has secured a first-tranche order worth about €800 million ($910 million) for metropolis metro trains within Hanoi’s urban rail projects, the French rail-technology company said.

In a statement on Moday, Alstom said the order is part of an agreement that Vietnam’s conglomerate Vingroup announced with Alstom on October 6. Alstom said it will book the order in the third quarter of its 2026/27 fiscal year (October-December 2026).

Alstom said the first-tranche trains will be designed and manufactured at its Valenciennes Petite-Forêt site in northern France.

Earlier this month, Vingroup said Alstom will supply a total of 200 Metropolis trains for Hanoi’s metro lines and transfer technology. Of those, 83 trains will be built as complete units at Valenciennes. Alstom will supply technology, engineering expertise, equipment, and key components so that Vingroup can assemble the other 117 in Vietnam.

Hanoi signed a turnkey contract on October 15 with the Vinhomes–SGC joint venture to build five urban rail lines, Nos. 1, 2, 8, 10 and 14, totaling about 253.5 kilometers. Vinhomes-SGC is managed by Vingroup.

The five projects have a total investment of nearly VND900,000 billion ($34 billion), excluding site clearance costs. The venture has ordered more than 100 tunnel boring machine lines and more than 50 diaphragm-wall equipment lines to work at several sites at once.

The city set a guidance ceiling of $120 million per kilometer, equivalent to $30.4 billion for 253.5 kilometers.
