Nik Rizal Kamil, CEO of Malaysian telecoms group Axiata, has been appointed to the board of the GSMA, the global mobile-industry association, for a two-year term starting in January.
In a statement on Tuesday, Axiata said the appointment continued its long involvement in the GSMA to which its senior managers also contribute through committees and working groups.
GSMA represents mobile operators and related companies worldwide and organizes the Mobile World Congress trade show; its board includes leaders of major telecom groups. Axiata
Nik Rizal became Axiata’s group CEO and managing director in June, after serving as group chief financial officer from 2024.
Nik Rizal said mobile connectivity had become a driver of economic growth and digital inclusion. As 5G, AI, and cloud technologies spread, the industry’s task is to turn connectivity into sustainable growth, the executive added. He will strive to advance policy, partnerships, and innovation on the board.
