Amazon Data Services Malaysia, a subsidiary of U.S.-based Amazon, will buy a plot of land in Malaysia’s Selangor state to build a data center, paying MYR316.84 million ($75 million) in cash to local property developer Sunsuria.
In a stock market filing on September 28, Sunsuria said Amazon Data Services Malaysia signed an agreement 28 to buy the freehold land in Dengkil, Sepang, from a Sunsuria subsidiary. The vacant plot spans about 184,000 square meters and can host data-processing services and infrastructure.
The price is about 3 percent above an independent valuation of MYR307 million, the filing showed. Sunsuria expects a one-off gain of about MYR50 million ($12 million) from the sale and will carry out infrastructure works serving the site at its own cost.
The deal needs several approvals, including consent from Selangor state for the purchase by a foreign-owned company and an endorsement from Malaysia’s data-center task force for the buyer’s planned development, Sunsuria said.
Completion is expected by the second quarter of 2027.
The purchase adds to Amazon Web Services’ expansion in Malaysia, home to a cloud region it is building with a planned $6 billion investment through 2037.
In May, Amazon said its investments into cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand are expected to reach over $33 billion by 2039.
