SoundHound AI has deployed its voice and generative artificial intelligence technology in the Kia Sorento sold in India, giving the sport utility vehicle a conversational assistant that can control cabin systems, answer vehicle questions and retrieve live information.

The California-based voice AI company announced the deployment on September 30. Kia’s India website separately lists a real-time generative AI assistant among the Sorento’s connectivity features and identifies SoundHound as the service provider for online voice recognition.

Assistant handles vehicle controls and live searches

The system responds to the wake phrase “Hey Kia” and supports multi-turn conversations, according to SoundHound. Drivers can use natural-language requests to adjust climate controls, cabin lighting, windows and driving modes without relying on fixed command phrases.

Passengers can also ask the assistant questions about the vehicle using information from the digital owner’s manual. SoundHound said the assistant can explain features such as hybrid powertrain functions and seating settings, while its search functions provide point-of-interest navigation, news and contextual question-and-answer responses.

Kia India’s Sorento product page describes the assistant as capable of understanding questions, maintaining a conversation and returning real-time answers. The same page lists voice command support alongside over-the-air software updates for vehicle controllers, connected services and driver-assistance features.

SoundHound described the India deployment as the global debut of the Kia AI Assistant with real-time generative AI in the Sorento lineup. The supplier did not disclose the commercial terms of its agreement with Kia, expected vehicle volumes or a revenue contribution from the rollout.

Voice data is processed by SoundHound

Kia’s privacy disclosures provide additional detail about how the service operates. Its India privacy policy says online voice recognition transfers voice samples to SoundHound and its subprocessors, which may be located outside India, so the requests can be converted into text, interpreted and returned to the vehicle.

For the Kia AI Assistant, Kia says voice commands are transmitted to SoundHound in real time to process requests and generate responses. The automaker classifies the relevant information as pseudonymized identifiers, usage-based data and recording data, and says the feature can be disabled through the vehicle’s head-unit settings.

That disclosure is significant because generative AI in vehicles combines convenience features with continuous network services and data processing. The effectiveness of the assistant will depend not only on language understanding but also on response latency, cabin-noise handling, connectivity and the accuracy of information returned to drivers.

Automakers expand conversational AI in Asia

The Sorento deployment extends SoundHound’s automotive business into another large Asian vehicle market. The company positions its OASYS platform as a system for building and operating conversational agents across cloud and embedded environments, including vehicles and smart devices.

Six days before the Sorento disclosure, SoundHound introduced OASYS Edge, an architecture intended to run language-model-powered voice agents on vehicle and device hardware. The company says local processing can keep some functions available without continuous network access and reduce the data sent to cloud services. SoundHound expects deployments of that embedded product to begin later in 2026.

Kia is also developing its broader software-defined vehicle strategy through Hyundai Motor Group. The group has outlined plans for next-generation infotainment systems with large-language-model-based voice assistants and over-the-air updates across Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles.

For SoundHound, the India launch supplies a visible production reference for its automotive technology. For Kia, it adds a branded generative AI feature to a flagship sport utility vehicle rather than limiting the technology to a demonstration or future model plan.
