The National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Office, which comes under the purview of MyDigital Corporation, is expected to begin its operation in November, according to Malaysia’s Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

“The Cabinet meeting held two weeks ago has approved the proposal to establish this office. It is hoped that the National AI Office will be operational in November,” he told reporters on Thursday, national news agency Bernama reported.

Gobind said one of the National AI Office’s main areas of focus will be to create an ecosystem to make Malaysia a regional AI hub.

“This includes attracting investors from all over the world, making them view Malaysia as a key destination for data centres and the related ecosystem.

“We acknowledge the importance of new technologies and the need to prepare our country for this technology. With the setting up of the National AI Office, Malaysia is taking steps to ensure we become a leader in this area at the global level,” he added.

Meawhile, it was reported in May that the development of the AI governance and ethics code (Aige) framework is at the final stage and will be launched soon, national news agency Bernama reported.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said Aige is a framework to set parameters for AI users in industries.
