Below are the edited excerpts:
Can you share why did you start Geb Impact? What’s the vision and mission? What are the problems you aim to solve, and the future you hope the project can reach?
The versatility of microalgae’s applications and their benefits to humanity in terms of ESG and SDG initiatives drew me in. These single-celled, photosynthetic organisms are packed with nutrients and are well-known for their rapid growth and ability to produce a wide range of compounds, including lipids, proteins, vitamins, and carbohydrates. With uses ranging from biofuel production to food supplements, food coloring, skincare products, greenhouse gas sequestration, and wastewater treatment, microalgae play a crucial role in various industries.
Additionally, their importance in aquatic ecosystems cannot be overstated, as they form the base of the food chain and provide sustenance for a diverse array of organisms.
Since its inception, has this project undergone any changes from the initial vision? What do you think was the most difficult period in this project? How did you overcome the challenges?
The project’s vision and mission have remained steadfast since its inception. While market dynamics may have shifted due to changing consumer demands, the fundamental need for healthy, natural, and plant-based food ingredients persists.
The process of cultivating bioorganisms is far more complex from a technological standpoint than one might assume at first glance. The innovative ingredient we are working with has a wide range of applications and is on track to become a valuable commodity. It is essential to achieve large-scale production with optimal efficiency, adhering to lean manufacturing principles and meeting various criteria such as high yields, industrial-scale output, minimal environmental impact, non-GMO certification, and cost-effectiveness.
We have adopted a precision manufacturing approach and successfully executed a project in collaboration with the Hong Kong Innovative Technology Council’s ESS program. Additionally, we have obtained patents in China and submitted applications in the United States, further solidifying our position in the market.
During the finale of Fund at First Pitch (FAFP) at the BEYOND Expo, what do you think about your performance?
During the finale, I believe that our performance was able to showcase the potential of our project effectively. We highlighted the unique value proposition of our venture and demonstrated our ability to execute on our business plan. Overall, I am proud of our performance and confident in the choices we made during the competition.
