Tapping into the youth workforce potential

The Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN) and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimate that Indonesia will experience a demographic bonus by 2045. The condition where Indonesia will have around 207.99 million people of productive age could contribute to economic growth. But this demographic bonus can be disastrous if the rise in productivity or ability does not accompany the increase in population.

Currently, Indonesia is also facing significant skills gaps. A survey from the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found a substantial proportion of adults in Jakarta lack literacy and numeracy. This skills gap is even more significant for disadvantaged groups with low levels of education attainment and low socioeconomic status.

With approximately 68,63% of the population at working age, serious collaboration with every government and private sector stakeholder must occur to achieve these goals; thus, these are some of the main reasons behind KUPU’s events and programs.

KUPU Goes to School program highlights and plans

Since August, the program has helped over 19.100 students, and graduates prepare for work across 235 Vocational schools in Jakarta, with training on career progression through seminars and workshops providing students with interview techniques, CV writing tips, and soft skills development.

Going one step further, graduates can attend job matching, where they can directly apply for walk-in interviews with job providers in the event. There was also a grooming area where attendees could receive free haircuts, make-up, and photographs to prepare attendees for the walk-in interview and educate them with tips on how to be presentable during interviews. The events also aimed to match upcoming graduates to vacant positions in the market, helping them climb the career ladder.

After the event, KUPU received exceptional feedback from students and teachers, further proving the high demands and needs of the KUPU Goes to School program.

A student from SMK Bina Karya commented on the workshops, “The workshop has been invaluable to me. It helped me answer many questions I had about the world of work before I entered the market. Thanks to KUPU, I feel much more prepared for interviews and understand more about what employers are looking for.”

A leader from SMK Selagan said, “We look forward to welcoming KUPU to our school again and are looking for ways we can make employment skills training a regular feature of our curriculum.”

A teacher from SMK Budi Asih stated, “The training was informative and able to attract the student interest, so the students were very enthusiastic in participating.”

In 2023, the “KUPU Goes to School Program” will continue across 100 vocational schools in Jakarta, focusing on students majoring in pharmacy, business management, and hospitality. Several upcoming workshop materials include Effective Communication, Delivering Excellent Service, English Language, and Career Preparation, including in-depth CV look-throughs and interview tips.
