Singapore and Sweden will deepen cooperation on clean energy technologies, including hydrogen, ammonia and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, as both countries seek to advance the energy transition and strengthen regional electricity interconnectivity.
The Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Sweden’s Ministry of Climate and Enterprise reaffirmed their commitment during Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s state visit to Sweden on Oct 19-20, EMA said in a statement on Tuesday.
This follows the signing of the Singapore – Sweden Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Energy Cooperation during the State Visit of HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in November 2024, which was followed by several exchanges to deepen collaboration on energy and grid technologies, and regional energy interconnectivity.
EMA and Sweden also jointly launched the inaugural Singapore – Sweden Forum in 2025, which was held in conjunction with the 18th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW).
Both sides will build upon this positive momentum to deepen exchanges on the clean energy transition. By combining Swedish strengths in energy innovation with Singapore’s position as a leading energy and innovation hub, both sides will explore opportunities to deepen cooperation and exchanges on emerging energy technologies, including hydrogen and ammonia, as well as on regional energy interconnectivity and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technologies.
Business Sweden supports the implementation of the cooperation by facilitating dialogue between government agencies, companies, and other stakeholders in the energy sector.
On October 20, during the State Visit to Sweden by Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a high-level energy session will be held focusing on future energy systems and opportunities for deeper collaboration between Sweden and Singapore.
In addition, Business Sweden will be organizing “Spotlight: Sweden” during the 19th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) on October 29, 2026.
The initiative aims to strengthen bilateral energy partnerships and explore how Swedish energy solutions can contribute to Singapore’s energy transition. This cooperation builds on developments in both countries.
“EMA welcomes the deepening of energy cooperation with Sweden Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, underpinned by our shared commitment to innovation and the energy transition,
“Since the signing of the MOU on Energy Cooperation in 2024, both sides have made good progress in deepening our exchanges on energy technologies and regional energy interconnectivity. We look forward to building on this strong foundation in support of a secure, resilient and sustainable energy future,” said Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority of Singapore.
Ebba Busch, Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister, Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, Sweden, said Singapore and Sweden are partners in advancing a competitive and sustainable energy transition.
“By combining Swedish strengths in energy innovation with Singapore’s ambitious energy agenda, we are creating new opportunities for knowledge exchange, investment, and long-term cooperation.” she added.
