Singapore’s Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo and Grab Co-founder and Group CEO Anthony Tan are among more than 40 founding members of the newly-launched AI for Good Global Commission.
In a statement last Friday, the commission said it aims to bridge digital divides by strengthening trust, widening access, and ensuring developing countries jointly develop AI. A key task is to approach 2.2 billion people still offline, or a quarter of the global population, to participate in AI. The commission is set to hold its inaugural meeting at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva on July 7-10.
The commission is co-chaired by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and Salesforce Chair and CEO Marc Benioff, with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin as vice-chair. It leadership also features executives from Anthropic, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Pfizer, and other global organizations.
Other founding members include CEOs and top executives from Qualcomm, Accenture, FedEx, Vodafone, Orange Group, Reliance Industries, ArcelorMittal, MTN Group, ZTE, and Sakana AI, alongside heads of state from Estonia and Iceland and government leaders from Kazakhstan, Namibia, Nigeria, and Togo. UN agency heads from UNDP, UNESCO, WIPO, WTO, and GSMA are also among the founding members.
President Kagame said technology is supposed to be a force for good and called for collective work to reduce inequality and allow more citizens to benefit from AI. Benioff said the promise of AI is built not only on opportunities for economic growth but on the foundation of trust required for shared success.
The Commission builds on the foundation of the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which helped shape global priorities for connectivity and digital inclusion.
Bogdan-Martin said no organization can single-handedly put AI at the service of all humanity, and that collective leadership and combined expertise across sectors are needed to ensure AI benefits all people everywhere.
