Singapore-headquartered e-commerce and gaming giant Sea Ltd and OpenAI willl collaborate to drive AI adoption across Southeast Asia and Brazil, focusing on AI-powered e-commerce.
In a statement on Monday, Sea Ltd, known for e-commerce platform Shopee, said the two sides have signed a new strategic partnership, expanding access to ChatGPT for Shopee users and sellers, and accelerating engagement with OpenAI’s Codex among developers.
As part of the partnership, the Shopee app is now available within ChatGPT for users in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Brazil. It will make Shopee the first e-commerce platform of its kind available across both Southeast Asia and Latin America in ChatGPT.
The integration allows users to discover Shopee products through conversational prompts before continuing their shopping journey on the platform, Sea Ltd highlighted.
Forrest Li, Chairman and CEO of Sea, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to making AI more accessible and meaningful for the communities Sea serves, combining OpenAI’s capabilities with Sea’s ecosystem to deliver AI-native experiences for consumers and growth tools for businesses.
Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI, said the partnership will help more consumers discover AI-powered experiences and give small businesses practical tools to grow.
The partnership will also introduce ChatGPT for Business to Shopee’s seller ecosystem, helping sellers create product listings and marketing content, improve customer service workflows, and automate business operations, supported by trials, onboarding resources, and training programs.
Besides, Sea Litd and OpenAI jointly organized the first regional Codex Hackathon series in Asia Pacific, which kicked off in Singapore in early June. The event attracted more than 1,200 applications. Additional hackathons are planned in Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia in the coming months.
