As demand for high-performance computing and low latency connectivity intensifies, Open DC, a Malaysia-based data center solutions firm, has unveiled Penang’s first full-scale, next generation data center (PE2).

Commenced operations in April 2025, PE2 is designed to meet growing demands for ultra-low latency connectivity and high-performance computing, positioning Penang as a key player in the region’s digital economy, the firm said in a statement on Friday.

This state-of-the-art facility underscores Open DC’s dedication to providing innovative, future-ready infrastructure that fuels business success and sustainable growth.

Located on a 10-acre campus in Bayan Lepas Technology Park, PE2 is Penang’s largest and most advanced data center, with a 30MW power capacity.

PE2 is also equipped to support high-capacity racks, catering to the demanding requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model (LLM) applications.

Built to support compute-intensive workloads, it offers unmatched scalability for businesses in a data-driven world.

PE2 also plays a pivotal role in advancing Penang’s digital transformation, providing the critical infrastructure needed to support the state’s ambitious digitalization goals.

Incorporating solar and renewable energy sources, PE2 aligns with Open DC’s sustainability goals, delivering an efficient and eco-friendly platform for growth.

“The establishment of PE2 marks a pivotal step in Penang’s journey toward becoming a digitally advanced, low-carbon economy,

“As a strategic infrastructure anchor, PE2 will accelerate high-value investments, spark innovation and enhance Penang’s global competitiveness in next-generation technologies,” said Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang.

According to him, it also reflects the growing impact of the Penang Silicon Design @5KM+ initiative, the country’s state-led effort to build a world-class ecosystem for semiconductor innovation and digital excellence.

PE2 integrates DE-CIX Malaysia’s Penang Internet Exchange transport node, enabling fast, local internet traffic exchange.

This reduces latency, enhances connectivity for telecom providers and supports industries like tech, manufacturing and finance.

From AI-driven enterprises to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) pursuing digital transformation, businesses gain a scalable, high-performance edge.

Positioned near Penang International Airport and major highways, with a reliable electrical grid, PE2 ensures seamless connectivity, resilience and consistent power- critical for today’s competitive landscape.

“PE2 Penang is a game-changer for Malaysia’s digital economy, delivering Penang’s first full-scale, next-generation data center to power AI, cloud and Industry 4.0 innovation,

“At Open DC, we’re committed to providing infrastructure that drives our customers’ success,” said Weng-Yew Wong, Managing Director of Open DC.

According to him, PE2’s advanced technology, strategic location and focus on sustainability make it the ideal hub for businesses looking to thrive in the digital age.

According to the statement, PE2 reflects Open DC’s aims to empower enterprises with cutting-edge, sustainable and strategically located solutions, reinforcing the firm’s leadership in the Asia Pacific region.

In collaboration with InvestPenang, Open DC plays a key role in enhancing the Penang Silicon Design @5KM+ (PSD@5KM+) ecosystem by providing reliable, scalable and secure data center solutions designed to support semiconductor design firms and tech companies in the region.

“Open DC is well-positioned to be part of the PSD@5KM+ technology collaborators and ecosystem partners, enabling the digital backbone essential for next-generation innovation,

“This kind of infrastructure support is critical in realizing our shared aspiration for a thriving chip design ecosystem and advancing the ‘Made by Malaysia Chip’ – Designed and Develop in Penang’s vision,” said Loo Lee Lian, Chief Executive Officer of InvestPenang.

“As we position Penang as a premier destination for advanced technology investments, infrastructure partners like Open DC are pivotal in shaping a future-ready, innovation-driven landscape,” she added.

In addition to technical excellence, PE2 leverages renewable energy agreements, solar solutions and eco-efficient systems – reflecting the firm’s commitment to green development and supporting Penang’s low-carbon digital future.
