OMRON Healthcare has begun full-scale production of blood pressure monitors at its first manufacturing site in India, expanding local supply while adding a new base to a network that has relied heavily on Vietnam.

The 24,000-square-meter plant near Chennai in Tamil Nadu has five production lines and will make devices for the Indian market, according to an OMRON Healthcare announcement published on Friday. The company said it intends to increase the site’s production capacity tenfold by 2028 and eventually use it to supply other markets.

India joins OMRON’s manufacturing network

OMRON established the Indian manufacturing company in July 2022 and began mass production in October 2026. The site had 120 employees as of November 2026, according to the company’s factory profile.

The first products include standard blood pressure monitors as well as models that can show changes in readings and connect with the OMRON Connect health-management app. OMRON said it has transferred production techniques and quality-control practices from plants in Japan and Vietnam to the Chennai operation.

Reuters reported that OMRON is targeting annual output of about 3 million units in India by 2028, with potential capacity of about 3.5 million units if the plant runs three shifts. The report said the factory will also supply Europe, supplementing production in Vietnam.

OMRON Healthcare President and Chief Executive Ayumu Okada told Reuters that India could become one of the company’s largest manufacturing bases. The move is also intended to reduce supply-chain risks created by concentrating production in one country or facility.

Company targets underpenetrated monitoring market

OMRON cited estimates that roughly 300 million people in India have hypertension while fewer than 5 percent of households use a blood pressure monitor at home. Those figures underscore the opportunity the company sees, but they are company-presented market estimates rather than independently audited operating data.

Reuters reported that OMRON held about 40 percent of India’s blood pressure monitor market in 2025. The company hopes home-monitor penetration will reach about 10 percent by 2030, although Okada said local production would not lead to lower device prices.

India is increasingly trying to build domestic medical-device capacity under the government’s Make in India program. OMRON said local sourcing, employee training and job creation at the Chennai plant would contribute to that policy objective.

For OMRON, the factory creates a base closer to a large potential market while diversifying its manufacturing footprint. It also gives the company room to add other products: OMRON said it may eventually produce nebulizers used in respiratory care at the site.

Expansion targets remain company plans

The plant is operational, but the 2028 capacity increase, European export role and additional product lines remain forward-looking. Their timing will depend on demand, supply-chain execution and any required approvals.

The launch is separate from OMRON Healthcare Singapore’s earlier embedded-health partnership with bolttech and QBE, which combined monitoring devices with insurance and subscription services.
