China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) said its fifth-generation DRAM platform has entered mass production, marking another step in the company’s effort to close the gap with the global memory-chip industry.

The new platform uses quadruple-patterning technology to reduce memory-cell feature spacing to 11.95 nanometers. CXMT said the process allows it to increase density while reducing cost and power consumption.

New 24-gigabit LPDDR5X chips

CXMT introduced two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X products based on the platform at the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention. The company said the chips store 50 percent more data than its previous models and are designed for smartphones and other portable devices.

The company also said gross die output per silicon wafer rises by at least 50 percent compared with its previous-generation process. Higher die output can improve manufacturing economics when yields and other production factors are kept under control.

CXMT said development of the platform involved extensive simulation work and cooperation with Chinese semiconductor-equipment suppliers. That domestic supply-chain angle remains important as Chinese chipmakers continue adapting to restrictions on access to some advanced US-origin semiconductor technologies and equipment.

DRAM expansion alongside NAND plans

The mass-production announcement comes only days after reports that CXMT is preparing to expand beyond DRAM into NAND flash memory. The company is planning an R&D production line for NAND at a new Beijing facility and has begun discussions with potential customers.

Together, the two developments indicate that CXMT is pursuing both deeper DRAM process capabilities and a broader memory portfolio as AI infrastructure contributes to stronger demand across the sector.

Global DRAM remains dominated by Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron Technology. CXMT’s ability to scale its newest process while maintaining yields, cost competitiveness and product qualification will determine how quickly the new platform translates into greater market share.
