Medtronic plans to make an approximately $700 million strategic investment in Hong Kong-based Cornerstone Robotics and will receive rights to distribute the company’s Sentire surgical system in select markets outside the United States where the system has market approval.
Cornerstone Robotics said the partnership will support wider access to robotic-assisted surgery by combining its surgical-robotics technology with Medtronic’s commercial reach. The companies did not disclose the markets covered by the distribution arrangement or the financial terms beyond the approximate investment amount.
Sentire approvals in China, Europe, and Singapore
Cornerstone said its Sentire system received approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration in 2024. It said the system subsequently received a CE Mark in the European Union and approval from Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority in May 2026 for minimally invasive general, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic procedures.
The company develops its hardware, control software, algorithms, imaging systems, and energy platforms in-house. It said that vertically integrated approach gives it control over product integration, quality, and supply-chain resilience, though the effectiveness of that model at a larger global scale will depend on manufacturing, clinical adoption, and local regulatory requirements.
Medtronic said Sentire will complement its Hugo robotic-assisted surgery platform. The arrangement gives the healthcare technology group another route into surgical robotics, an area where hospitals weigh capital costs, clinical evidence, physician training, service support, and interoperability alongside the potential benefits of minimally invasive procedures.
Expanding access to robotic surgery
Cornerstone said robotic-assisted surgery adoption remains in single digits globally, framing the partnership around the gap between demand for minimally invasive care and the availability of robotic systems. That broad adoption figure was supplied by the company and was not accompanied by a cited market source in the release.
For Cornerstone, the deal adds a major strategic investor and a potential distribution channel in approved markets. For Medtronic, it adds a system developed in Hong Kong with approvals across China, Europe, and Singapore, as the company expands its robotics portfolio.
The transaction is a notable cross-border healthcare-technology investment involving a Hong Kong-founded company. Its longer-term impact will depend on where Sentire is made available under the agreement, how health systems assess the system against other robotic platforms, and whether the collaboration translates into wider clinical use.
