TenPay Global, Tencent’s cross-border payment platform, and ShopeePay, the digital payment arm of Singapore’s Sea Ltd and associated with the e-commerce platform Shopee, have jointly launched a cross-border payment service connecting Southeast Asian users with merchants in China.

In a statement on Thursday, ShopeePay said the service allows its users to pay at merchants in China that accept Weixin Pay, Tencent’s Chinese payment service known internationally as WeChat Pay, by scanning QR codes through their ShopeePay and Shopee apps.

The service will be available first to users in Singapore and Thailand, followed by Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines in later phases. It runs on TenPay Global’s cross-border payment infrastructure and Weixin Pay’s merchant network, which covers tens of millions of merchants in China.

The service aims to serve Southeast Asian travelers to China, which has become a growing tourist destination for the region. ShopeePay is the first regional payment provider to enable Weixin Pay QR payments in China for users across several Southeast Asian markets.

TenPay Global said it had partnered with close to 50 international digital wallets across 13 countries and territories to let overseas visitors pay at Weixin Pay merchants in China. Customers can pay with their home wallets, including PayPal in the United States, Hana Pay and Travel Wallet in South Korea, BCEL in Laos, and HiPay in Mongolia.

Supphavit Hongamornsin, head of ShopeePay, said the launch extended the service beyond users’ home markets and would help travelers pay more easily abroad.

Wenhui Yang, chief executive of TenPay Global in Singapore, said the partnership would strengthen payment connectivity between Southeast Asia and China.
