Microsoft has on Monday announced the appointment of Gunawan Susanto as Country General Manager for Microsoft Indonesia.

Gunawan steps into the role at a pivotal moment for the country, as Indonesia moves to turn its scale, young talent, and digital momentum into leadership in the artificial intelligence (AI) era, the firm said in a statement.

The appointment builds on Microsoft’s deepening, long-term commitment to Indonesia, including a $1.7 billion investment over four years in local cloud and AI infrastructure, and a sustained push to build the country’s AI talent.

Since Microsoft Elevate was first introduced in Indonesia, more than 2 million people have participated, and over 1.2 million have earned Microsoft-recognized credentials as the company works alongside the government, enterprises, developers, and the country’s vast small-business community to widen access to the cloud and AI.

As Country General Manager, Gunawan will lead Microsoft’s business and partnerships across Indonesia, spanning the public sector, large enterprises, the digital-native and startup ecosystem, and millions of small and medium-sized businesses with a focus on responsible AI adoption, local talent, and inclusive growth.

“Indonesia is one of Asia’s most consequential digital economies, with the scale, talent, and ambition to lead in the AI era,

“With Gunawan’s experience and local insight, we will help Indonesian organizations turn that ambition into real impact and advance our commitment to empower every person and organization in the country,” said Mayank Wadhwa, President, Microsoft ASEAN.

Gunawan Susanto said Microsoft’s commitment to innovation and empowerment aligns strongly with his belief that technology can be a powerful force for positive change.

“I am particularly inspired by the potential to leverage Microsoft’s capabilities to support Indonesia’s digital transformation and advance my personal mission of improving healthcare access for every Indonesian,” he added.

Gunawan brings more than two decades of technology leadership experience to the role, having previously served as President Director and Chief Executive Officer of both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and IBM Indonesia.

He has a strong track record of bringing world-class technology capabilities to Indonesia, enabling organizations across industries to transform, innovate, and grow, while contributing to the nation’s digital and economic progress.

Most recently, he has invested in Indonesia’s healthcare sector through a private equity fund and serves as an Independent Commissioner at PT Dayamitra Telekomunikasi (Mitratel).

He succeeds Dharma Simorangkir, who led Microsoft Indonesia through a period of strong growth.
