Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed its first carbon-free energy agreement in Malaysia with Elphil Energy, an affiliate of Asiabina Group, for a 23-megawatt solar project in Sungai Siput, Perak.

In a statement on Monday, AWS, under American e-commerce giant Amazon, said it signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Malaysian partner for the move. The solar plant can power up the equivalent of more than 50,000 Malaysian households annually, while diversifying Malaysia’s energy mix with new utility-scale carbon-free capacity.

Welcoming the cooperation, Malaysia’s Energy Commission CEO Siti Safinah Salleh said the project reflects AWS’s commitment to working with local stakeholders. The project can support the nation’s target of achieving 40 percent renewable energy capacity by 2035, the executive added.

For AWS, the deal is part of a broader push toward its Climate Pledge goal of reaching net-zero carbon across all operations by 2040. Hussein Mohd Ali, AWS Malaysia Country Manager, said the investment builds on the 2024 launch of the AWS Malaysia Region, helping power the country’s digital transformation for startups and enterprises alike.

Asiabina Group, one of Malaysia’s leading large-scale solar developers, has operated more than 270 MW of solar power projects since launching its renewable energy division in 2017, including a 50MW plant also located in Perak.
