Malaysia-based highway operator West Coast Expressway Sdn Bhd (WCE) has adopted IOroad, Asia Mobiliti’s pavement monitoring and management System on critical sections of the West Coast Expressway (E32), a 233-km interstate controlled-access highway running along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Asia Mobiliti, the Malaysia’s mobility-as-a-service and digital city solutions company, said in a statement on Monday that the IOroad system is a proprietary technology developed by the firm.

It is a drive-by sensing system that leverages advanced internet of things (IoT) and machine learning to provide near real-time insights into road pavement conditions.

With sensors installed on WCE service vehicles, the system captures high-precision vibration data and translates it into the International Roughness Index (IRI) value, a global standard for measuring road quality.

As with most expressways, maintenance work orders are conventionally triggered by visual inspections or customer complaints, a process that lacks real-time data and efficient monitoring.

With the use of IOroad, WCE now has access to a digital twin of its road surface condition and predictive analytics for road maintenance that will in turn significantly enhance road safety, optimize maintenance operations, and improve the overall experience for motorists.

“We are thrilled to partner with West Coast Expressway to bring our innovative IOroad system to Malaysia’s vital transportation infrastructure,

“This deployment marks a significant step forward in leveraging cutting-edge IoT and machine learning to maintain safer roads with smarter operations,” said Ramachandran Muniandy, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Asia Mobiliti.

According to him, the proprietary technology, which was spawned from our railway track defects monitoring system, will enable WCE to transition from traditional reactive
maintenance to a highly proactive and predictive approach, ultimately enhancing the travel experience for all users.

Meanwhile, Lyndon Alfred Felix, Chief Executive Officer of WCE, commented that the firm is proud to be the first expressway operator in Malaysia to adopt IOroad.

“This collaboration with Asia Mobiliti brings cutting-edge technology to our operations, strengthening our ability to manage road assets effectively while delivering better value and safety to our users,

“It also aligns with our commitment to continuous innovation and long-term sustainability,” he added.

The deployment of IOroad on the West Coast Expressway also represents a new benchmark for infrastructure management in Malaysia, demonstrating how technology and data can reshape the future of expressway operations across the region by enabling predictive, real-time and cost-effective monitoring systems, said the statement.
