Malaysia-based solar energy firm EFS Group has joined forces with Planet QEOS and four energy partners in a landmark collaboration to deliver the MYR 2.32 billion ($550 million) Baram DeepTech Energy Program.
The groundbreaking facility will be Malaysia’s first renewable energy plant capable of supplying 24/7 dispatchable power comparable to gas and hydropower, EFS said in a statement.
As the agrovoltaic and food security partner of Planet QEOS, EFS will co-develop a 155 megawatt-peak solar plant with 310 megawatt-hours of battery storage — while anchoring the Special Economic Zone’s (SEZ) food security and smart agriculture strategy.
Building on its success managing a 312-hectare high-yield cassava farm in Thailand, EFS will transform more than 650 hectares of land, implementing the agrovoltaic system that will produce over MYR 643 million ($152 million) in output, create more than 550 rural jobs, and advance the SEZ’s mission of energy, food, and job security.
This approach integrates large-scale solar power with sustainable agriculture—transforming into multifunctional land that supports both clean energy generation and crop production, all while enabling community development.
This unique model positions Baram as a global exemplar of how solar energy can seamlessly coexist with food systems.
“Our involvement in this project shows more than engineering expertise—it shows our commitment to creating inclusive, climate-resilient systems that uplift communities,
“Our goal is to help the local communities foster self-reliance, leading to a sustained and enhanced quality of life for all,” said Darren Tan, Chief Executive Officer of EFS Group.
This project embodies EFS Group’s strategic vision—leveraging innovation to deliver tangible, long-term impact for both Sarawak and Malaysia’s wider transition to clean energy, said the statement.
