Global impact asset manager ResponsAbility will invest up to $15 million on behalf of its investors in August Energy, an energy-as-a-service (EaaS) infrastructure platform headquartered in Singapore with offices in Thailand, India, and the Philippines.
ResponsAbility said in a statement on Wednesday that the funding will support August Energy in expanding its portfolio of distributed renewable energy projects in India.
The investment is part of responsAbility’s $500 million climate investment strategy for Asia, which targets scalable private-sector infrastructure solutions that contribute to measurable carbon dioxide (CO₂) reduction in high-growth markets across the region.
With the funding, August Energy plans to scale its project portfolio in India, aiming to increase its installed capacity to over one gigawatt (GW) within five years.
This planned growth would support India’s national target of 500 gigawatts in renewable energy capacity and contributes to the UN’s Net Zero objectives.
August Energy focuses on decentralized energy infrastructure for commercial and industrial (C&I) clients in India and Southeast Asia.
The company develops and operates rooftop solar and integrated utility services, including cooling-as-a-service and steam-as-a-service solutions.
Its target sectors include manufacturing, automotive suppliers, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and data centers.
“This first structured financing, delivered in partnership with responsAbility, marks a key milestone for our business,
“The facility gives us flexibility to execute on our growing project pipeline in India over the next 12 months,” said Michael Brown, Chief Investment and Financial Officer (CIFO), August Energy.
Meanwhile, Rohit Nanda, Chair of August Energy and Head of Sustainable Infrastructure at Aravest, an investor in August Energy, said bringing responsAbility on board is a strategic step to accelerate asset development in India and Southeast Asia.
“In a capital-intensive sector, structured debt plays a critical role in long-term value creation,” he added.
Sameer Tirkar, Head of Climate Infrastructure Investments, Asia Pacific (APAC) at responsAbility, said August Energy is a well-positioned platform for decentralized energy solutions in the region.
“The investment aligns with our strategy to back scalable private-sector infrastructure that drives emissions reduction,” he added.
Jay Bathija, Senior Investment Officer, Climate Infrastructure Investments at responsAbility, said August Energy combines technical scope, a clear climate focus, and a strong shareholder base – core attributes the firm seeks in its portfolio companies.
August Energy is a developer and long-term owner of energy infrastructure assets, helping corporates across Southeast Asia and India to meet their decarbonization goals, profitably, with zero capital investment and at scale.
The company provides a comprehensive set of proven and customized energy solutions as a service including renewable energy, energy storage, cooling, heat recovery, and bioenergy.
The company is backed by institutional investors including Asia-Pacific Sustainable & Decarbonization Infrastructure Equity, LP (SDIEF), an Aravest and SMBC Group backed investment fund, and Green Tower, an investment vehicle promoted by the Green Giraffe group and Daiwa Securities.
ResponsAbility Investments AG is a leading impact asset manager specializing in private market investments across three investment themes – financial inclusion, climate finance and sustainable food.
