Malaysia’s integrated telco Maxis and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) are forging partnership to develop 5G solutions in healthcare and education.

Maxis said in a statement on last Thursday that the duo are collaborating on the joint development of 5G solutions, leveraging Maxis’ network infrastructure and technology capabilities and UTAR’s expertise as a leading institution of higher education.

The two organizations will explore commercially viable opportunities related to the deployment and utilization of 5G solutions, focusing on innovation in the fields of healthcare and education.

Beyond these two fields, joint solutions such as on cybersecurity, green technology and smart campus initiatives may also be developed leveraging Maxis’ network infrastructure.

In the healthcare field, potential 5G-enabled solutions may include remote surgery (telesurgery), advanced telemedicine, remote consultations and real-time health monitoring.

As for education, solutions may be developed to facilitate and enhance the learning experience through immersive environments and interactive content delivery.

For instance, 5G-enabled augmented reality (AR) applications can enable remote access and participation in lectures whilst enriching the learning experience through multimedia content integrated into real-world environments.

“This partnership aligns with UTAR’s commitment to fostering research and innovation that addresses critical needs in healthcare and education,

“By leveraging the combined strengths of academia and industry, we can co-create transformative solutions that contribute to technological advancements and societal progress,” said Ir. Prof. Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR President.

Meanwhile, Prateek Pashine, Maxis Chief Enterprise Business Officer, said that healthcare and education are critical fields that require future-ready ideas, and industry-academia collaborations such as this will help to accelerate innovation.

“Through Maxis Business, we look forward to enabling 5G solutions that can transform healthcare delivery and education environments, making them more dynamic, accessible and personalized,” he added.

According to the statement, this collaboration builds on prior initiatives by Maxis Business, Maxis’ business to business (B2B) arm, to drive greater adoption of 5G and 5G-Advanced solutions among businesses in Malaysia.

Maxis Business remains committed to being the digital business partner of choice through its end-to-end connectivity and connectivity-plus solutions.

Previously, UTAR selected Maxis in 2019 to provide two of its campuses at Sungai Long and Kampar with high-speed Internet services.

Through the collaboration, each of the campuses were equipped with Maxis’ connectivity solutions that would also enable UTAR to scale up their bandwidth seamlessly to much higher speeds.
