Malaysian renewable energy firm Yinson Renewables has officially launched the Matarani solar plant in Peru.
The firm said in a statement on Thursday that the 97 MWp Matarani solar plant, located in the Mollendo Desert in the Arequipa region, entered into full operational phase in September 2024.
It is designed to deliver 260 GWh of renewable energy annually, satisfying the electricity needs of approximately 62,000 Peruvian households.
Yinson Renewables said the firm is ambitiously expanding in Latin America, aiming to develop nearly 1 GW of projects within the next three to five years.
The 130 MWp Majes Project in Peru, which is owned by Yinson Renewables, is expected to begin the first phase of construction by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, the 486 MW Vicosa and Santa Clara wind projects are in advanced development stages and are preparing for construction.
“In Peru, we have found excellent partners and supportive policies for an inclusive transition, leading us to build a robust renewables pipeline in the region,
“We thank the Peruvian and Malaysian governments for their support, enabling Yinson to operate smoothly and collaborate across borders,” Yinson Group Chief Executive Officer Lim Chern Yuan said.
Leveraging the shared experience from both countries, he said the firm looks forward to making a positive impact locally and globally.
Yinson Renewables Chief Executive Officer David Brunt also shared that as a Malaysian company, the firm is very proud to contribute to Peru’s energy transition and to be a good example of effective cooperation across Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
“Projects like Matarani not only help us expand and improve our capabilities and competence, but also contribute significantly to new industrial and energy developments of national importance back home in Malaysia,
“We are committed to continuing our participation in the energy transition and look forward in announcing more projects in Peru and elsewhere, playing a key role in Yinson’s journey towards to a greener, more resilient energy future,” he said.
