PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo), the largest digital ecosystem in Indonesia, has on Thursday announced that its near and long-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets across all the countries it is present in have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

GoTo said in a statement that this validation by the SBTi makes GoTo the first Indonesian publicly listed company to receive SBTi verification of its net-zero target.

The SBTi is the world’s leading verification body for corporate emission reduction targets, ensuring alignment with the latest climate science and with the Paris Agreement.

The SBTi has evaluated GoTo’s near and long-term targets against the SBTi net-zero criteria and determined that it is in line with a 1.5°C trajectory.

This approval of its net-zero target marks a significant milestone for GoTo Group, underscoring the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and ensuring its roadmaps align with a science-based approach to mitigating climate change.

Specifically, GoTo’s approved targets are: reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2050; reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 83 percent by 2030 from a 2022 base year; reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 95 percent by 2050 from a 2022 base year.

GoTo Group said it commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 51 percent within the same timeframe.

It also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90 percent within the same timeframe.

The approved targets are also in line with GoTo Group’s Three Zeros commitments (zero Emissions, zero Waste, and zero Barriers), including its goal to transition to 100 percent renewable energy and electric vehicles in its driver-partner ecosystem by 2030.

“The SBTi is the gold standard when it comes to ensuring companies’ net-zero targets are credible and verifiable,

“Achieving SBTi’s validation of our targets is a testament to our commitment and ongoing efforts towards decarbonization, and our dedication to integrate sustainability into the way that GoTo Group operates and grows,” said Tanah Sullivan, Group Head of Sustainability, GoTo Group.

“We will continue to focus on working closely with our stakeholders to reduce our emissions footprint, especially in increasing the adoption of electric vehicles and optimizing mobility across our ecosystem,

“Despite the long road ahead of us, we are proud of achieving this milestone, and will continue to play our part in addressing climate change, whilst pushing for others in our ecosystem to do the same,” he added.

According to the statement, GoTo Group continues to make strong progress in its emissions reduction efforts, particularly in transitioning its entire fleet to electric vehicles (EVs).

It is noted that EV adoption amongst Gojek driver-partners grew rapidly by 260 percent this year as compared to 2022, and over 18 million kilometers have been covered by two-wheel EVs since the GoRide Electric service was first introduced.

Electrum, the joint venture between GoTo Group and PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk, also launched its first self-designed e-scooter model called H5 this year, which is developed with local needs in mind and aimed at enabling more driver-partners to make the switch to an EV.

The SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.

The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
