The Singapore Computer Society (SCS), in partnership with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), have on Monday announced the third edition of the Singapore 100 Women in Tech (SG 100 WiT) list.
This initiative recognises and celebrates the achievements of women in Singapore’s tech industry and aims to inspire more women to pursue or advance their careers in technology and for female students to discover their interest and passion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), both parties said in a statement.
At the same time, the nominations serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement to promote gender diversity in the STEM field.
Themed “Empowering Yourself, Inspiring Others”, the SG100 WiT list aims to honour 100 inspiring women and young rising stars who have created tech solutions or won tech competitions and had contributed significantly to the tech community in their sphere of influence.
These women would be role models in areas such as business and tech leadership, community advocates, technologists, educators or researchers, and entrepreneurs. The second edition in 2021 saw more than 600 nominations received in total from members of the public as well as from schools and universities.
The “Girls in Tech” category returns this year. This category focuses on female students in Singapore who are rising stars pursuing their passion and interest in technology.
Local schools and institutions may nominate female students 13 years old and above who are role models to their classmates and who harness the power of technology for the benefit of the community.
“We are delighted to present the third edition of this initiative and it is a testament to our commitment of attracting, retaining, and developing women talent across a diversity of Infocomm technology roles in the industry,” said Tan Lee Chew, President of Women in Tech Chapter at SCS and President Commercial at ST Engineering.
“It is heartening to see the increasing contributions of women in the tech sector. This initiative celebrates their determination and resilience in pursuing growth opportunities and in setting a high bar of excellence to create a gender-diverse workforce that takes the nation forward,
“This year, we want to continue the efforts of honouring more women of diverse backgrounds and empowering the next generation of young women,” she added.
Dr Ong Chen Hui, Chairperson of SG Women in Tech and Assistant Chief Executive of IMDA, said the tech industry is constantly growing and evolving, and women are playing a vital role in shaping its future.
“Since its inception, the SG 100 Women in Tech has recognised the most important women in our digital economy; inventors and engineers who have been advancing the art and science of technology,
“We want to honour the achievements of inspiring women in the tech industry and encourage more women to consider careers in tech. We can start by amplifying the voices of women who are already making their mark in the field and spread the message of female empowerment to cultivate a more inclusive society,” she added.
Nominations are now open from February 20, 2023 to April 15, 2023. Individuals, organisations and companies are invited to nominate inspiring women in tech who are making a significant impact in their field.
The nomination criteria include but are not limited to, demonstrated excellence in tech expertise, leadership and community advocacy.
The contributions and achievements of nominees should be inspiring, influential and impactful.
Nominations should also include a short description or definition of nominees’ areas of tech specialisation.
Past honourees of SG Women in Tech list include ICT and data scientists, business entrepreneurs, for example, Petty Chen, Hospital Lead at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Chong Boon Sim, Associate Director of Industrial Design at Razer Inc., Nancy Chen, Scientific Advisor to NOVO, Isabel Chong, Senior Vice-President of Digital Industries at Siemens, Sharon Gin, Senior Manager of Product Technology at Esri Singapore, among others.
The list will be selected by a committee comprising both men and women from academia, industry and who are business leaders in Singapore.
The committee will be chaired by Professor Alex Siow, SCS Honorary Fellow and Professor (Practice) in the School of Computing, National University of Singapore.
The selected 100 women will be honoured at a special ceremony and featured in a series of events and initiatives aimed at inspiring and empowering future generations of women in tech.
An initiative by the Infocomm Media Development Authority in partnership with the tech industry and community, SG Women in Tech (SGWIT) aims to attract and develop girls and women for the exciting and dynamic Infocomm tech sector in Singapore.
SGWIT believes in the value of a diverse workforce, the importance of role models for inspiring interest in tech, and partnerships for a supportive ecosystem for women in tech.
